Lizette Salas off to fiery start in Florida
American Lizette Salas displayed a stellar performance in the opening round of CME Group Titleholders 2012 as she carded a 68 to tie for the 8th position along with three other contenders.
Salas looked a little jittery when she opened the round on Thursday morning at The TwinEagles Club, Naples, Florida. She carded a bogey on the first hole, but quickly regained composure by shooting two back-to-back birdies on the second and third hole.
Salas then parred the next three holes and fired another birdie on the par-4 7th. However, she failed to judge the ball on the greens of 9th and ended up registering her second bogey.
On the back nine, the American star exhibited a much better form as she avoided bogeys. She drained another two straight birdies on the 12th and 13th and one birdie on the difficult par-3 17th.
Speaking to the media at the end of the round, Salas said that she was a little shocked after she made a start by carding a bogey, but then she made a quick comeback with the help of birdies.
“Well, I started off with a bogey on the first hole, so that kind of ‑‑ you know, it was a little reality check that it's not going to come easy,” said the LPGA star who only started her rookie year this season.
“So I came back with back‑to‑back birdies on the par 5 and the par 4 and then made some really good, tricky putts”.
She went on to say that there were plenty of holes that troubled her and rivals, but she remained firm on the greens.
“I forgot what hole it was, but I made really like a 35‑footer for birdie and then just really took advantage of the par 5s and made a really good birdie on 17 that got me to 4‑under,” she said.
Salas is one of the rising stars on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour and has surprised her fans on several occasions. Although she still has been trying to earn her first LPGA title since turning professional in June 2011, her performance at Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 has boosted her confidence.
She took part at the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2012 with confidence and finished tied for the ninth position on the leaderboard.
