Lizette Salas recounts her golf journey
American Lizette Salas managed to put her name among the much-improved players in the 2012 season, but the success took her years of efforts and commitment.
Salas is one of the fast-learning golfers in the United States, and her story of rising from an average child to a talented LPGA contender has gripped the attention of almost every women’s
golf fan in the country.
Her biggest task may still be a work in progress at the moment, as the ambitious star has yet to win her first LPGA title. However, her performance in some of the recent tournaments caused
observers to pay attention to her.
The LPGA Tour recently caught up with the golfing sensation and asked what had been the biggest motivation for her to take up golf as profession, Salas said that her father increased her interest
in the sport.
Recounting her journey to pro golf, the American golfer said that she had not been crazy about the sport at the outset, but it was her brother who was expected to take up golf as profession.
However, she admitted that she started playing golf as hobby that quickly turned into passion.
“My dad has been working at Azusa Greens golf course for 30‑plus years and he's the head mechanic there,” said Salas who has recorded one top-10 finish so far in her career.
“It was my brother supposed to play but he didn't like it, so I'm the youngest of three, so I went out there and just kind of took it as a hobby”.
She went on to say that she had then decided to use golf to help her further education. “That was my first and foremost goal when I was a child is that I knew golf can get me into school.
I was the first person in my family to graduate from college and I think that's another reason why I stayed”.
Starting her rookie season in the year 2012, Salas burst onto the LPGA scene with an impressive performance at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, held in March.
Despite a strong roster that featured big names like Stacy Lewis, Ai Miyazato and Suzann Pettersen, Salas stood her ground and managed to finish tied for the 22nd position.
