Lleyton Hewitt believes that Andy Murray has a golden chance at London Olympics – Tennis News
Australian tennis icon, Lleyton Hewitt, strongly contests that the British number one, Andy Murray, is amongst the top contenders of the Olympic gold medal. The British tennis ace also seems to be determined to recover his
earlier loss at the Wimbledon Championships at the hands of Roger Federer.
Hewitt, however, is fully confident that the Brit will do away with the burden of expectation weighted on his shoulders for his home Olympics. His fair share of success has continuously been overshadowed by the like of the
top class players like Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The 31-year-old Australian informed the media, “At the moment, those three guys are on form and how they have been playing in the last three or four years means they are worthy favourites for
the medals.”
The Scot is the top British star to compete in the Wimbledon final after a gap of more than seven decades. He is the sole representative of Great Britain’s team in the tennis singles category. He may also get an opportunity
to contest in the doubles draw, partnering with his brother Jamie Murray.
In the draws held for the London Games on Thursday, the third seeded will be competing against the 26th ranked Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the first round. Hewitt believes that the Brit is capable
of winning the initial match by securing a straight set victory. In a press conference Hewitt said, “He got upset pretty early in Beijing which was disappointing for him. He’ll have to be ready from the outset.”
If the initial rounds of the tournament turn out to as planned, then the 25-year-old will encounter the Serbian, Djokovic in the semi-finals of Olympics. Hence, London Olympics will still be a win-win situation for the Brit
because he will only improve his rankings but also take home some medal, unlike the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The Australian star defended Murray by further citing, “It’s a tough situation playing at home, whether it’s the Sydney Olympics for us or the Australian Open so we understand the pressure that he’s been under and he’s handled
himself extremely well.”
Hewitt is very impressed with the third seeded Brit’s performance this season. “It took Roger Federer to play a great match to beat him in the Wimbledon final.”
This year the British professional seems very optimistic about winning. Many believe that he is a good shape this year having strong home advantage over the other contenders that at the courts of All-England-Club.
