Lleyton Hewitt bounces over Tobias Kamke to enter round two – US Open 2012
Australian wild card entrant, Lleyton Hewitt, took down the German contender, Tobias Kamke, in a four-set thriller at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Wednesday. He hit back to formulate a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 victory against the world number 90 to charge into
the second round at this final of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
The former world number one, who conquered the US Open 11 years ago after trouncing Pete Sampras in the final, re-kindled his old spark to steal the show. He drew the first blood but stepped off gas, eventually gifting away the opening set to the 26-year-old.
However, Hewitt found his rhythm after that and ultimately clicked the match in two hours and 48 minutes.
Kamke made a sloppy entry at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He suffered the first blow in the second game and went 0-3 down. However, he capitalised on two out of seven break chances to pull out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
The 31-year-old rebounded in the follow-up set despite enduring the initial loss. He gifted away his serve in the opening game but quickly counterattacked in the very next game. After the German held his serve in the fourth game, Hewitt blasted massive forehands
to wipe out the last four games. He broke Kamke’s serve three times to bag the set with a 6-2 win.
Currently ranked 125th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour rankings, Hewitt perfected his ways in the third set. After Kamke levelled the scores at 1-1, the veteran unveiled his true form and clicked
the set with a breadstick.
The veteran carried his momentum in the fourth set and got the critical break in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead. Regardless of losing his edge in the proceeding game, Hewitt broke the German’s serve once again and clinched the set with a 6-4 score line.
Next in queue for Hewitt is the Luxembourgian star, Gilles Muller, who made an epic comeback from two sets down to outmuscle 28th seed Mikhail Youzhny in a five-set nail-biter.
