Lleyton Hewitt content from his performance in 2012 – Tennis News
Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, is extremely glad to leave behind the troublesome foot injury that gave him the career-threatening nightmares everyday in 2011. He is enjoying the time at the practice courts and doesn’t
feel any sort of pain at all. It is a major positive for the 83rd ranked Aussie who has declined any sort of retirement talks at least for foreseeable future.
He came out of the Pat Rafter Arena after a tiring training session but looked ecstatic from his performance; talked to the local media representatives on his way back to home.
Hewitt stated, “Last year was really tough coming in. I couldn't practice nearly as much as I wanted to and I couldn't do the off-court work either, which was frustrating. This year, so far, it's been fantastic. The foot has held
up extremely well, the rest of the body's holding up well, so we'll see what happens.”
He further added, “It's a massive difference, because I don't have to worry about all the other things – I can just go out there and compete. I'm enjoying practice and the gym so much more because I'm not in pain. It just makes
it so much easier to go out there and enjoy your tennis as well.”
The 31-year-old Aussie will begin the New Year campaign at the Brisbane International from 30th December. In 1998, the Aussie made a debut in this tournament and won it as well. He reached the final in the following
season before clinching the second title of Brisbane International in 2000. He reached the quarter-final in 2001 and didn’t return to arena until 2005.
He made three successive appearances in three editions of the tournament since 2005 but failed to clear the second round stage in each version of the event. It will be his eighth appearance in the Brisbane International event.
He holds a comprehensive record of 22-6 in the Brisbane International and the hunt for the third title of the tournament will begin as the tournament gets underway.
Hewitt ended the season with a record of 17-16 in 2012. It was the second worst record for him ever since he became pro in 1998. However, he is confident that he will improve in the following season and bring back the glory days.
