Lleyton Hewitt crushes Joao Sousa to enter round two – Sony Open Tennis 2013
Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, eased past the Portuguese contender, Joao Sousa, with a breadstick at the Sony Open Tennis 2013 on Wednesday. He notched up a 6-1, 7-6(3) victory against the Portuguese to power into the
second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Masters 1000 event taking place in Miami, United states.
The wild card entrant, Hewitt, showed tremendous skills to overpower late resilience posed by the Portuguese. He has reached three times at the semi-finals event at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park and after bagging this match,
he is eyeing to improve his record.
The Aussie reflected in a courtside interview after bagging the match:
“He played way better every time he was behind in the match. Whenever he'd get back on serve in the second set, he actually played worse. When he was behind, he sort of just went for it a lot more. That was tough because he sort
of had nothing to lose.”
Hewitt made a thunderous entry into this match. He went berserk from the start and eventually pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
Currently ranked 91st in the Emirates ATP World Tour Rankings, Hewitt maintained consistency in his game in the proceeding set. He was serving for the match at 5-4 and at 6-5. Despite squandering his chances, the Aussie
prevailed in the tie-breaker and eventually clinched the set with a 7-6(3) score line.
The Bahamas resident, Hewitt availed his seventh match point to seal the victory. The Aussie impressively warded off eight out of 11 breakpoints he came across and cashed five out of seven break chances to rule the match.
Next in queue for Hewitt is the 11th seed, Gilles Simon from France. He commented about his next match up:
“He's a different player. He obviously plays with a bit of finesse out there [and] moves the ball around extremely well. His movement is a big part of his game, as well. He can pull the trigger when he wants to on his first serve,
but also on the baseline.”
The Aussie has lost in his previous two meetings against Simon.
