Lleyton Hewitt gears up for the Brisbane International – Tennis News
Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt from Australia, has confirmed his participation at the Brisbane International 2013, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event held in Brisbane, Australia.
The Australian veteran recreated his magic this season and showed solid performance. He is currently working with the Australian legend Tony Roche and has reached far in several tournaments.
“I love playing the Australian tournaments and I have heard so many good things about the tournament,” Hewitt expressed his views about playing in Brisbane.
The 31-year-old is excited to play on the hard courts in Queensland which attracted 92,802 attendees.
“It’s always a tough field [in Brisbane], so there will be a lot of tough matches and I want to get as many tough matches as possible,” Hewitt reflected.
The tournament director, Cameron Pearson commented about Hewitt’s participation at this hard court event:
“Having Australia’s only current playing Grand Slam champions compete in Brisbane will no doubt give the fans plenty to cheer for and it again demonstrates the enormous appeal of Brisbane to provide the best preparation leading into the Australian Open.”
Currently ranked 105th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Hewitt re-ignited his spark at few tournaments this season. He made a fourth round showing at the Australian Open (lost out to Novak Djokovic) in January.
The Australian veteran then stepped off steam and crashed out from opening round at the French Open and the Wimbledon Championships. However, he made a spectacular return at the Newport ATP event. Hewitt entered this grass court event as a wild card entrant,
standing at world number 233. He cruised into the final showdown after stomping over his entire opponents. In the title-round, the Aussie bowed out to the top seed, John Isner, but jumped to the 159 spot in the ATP rankings.
Hewitt kept momentum rolling in London Olympics held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. He stunned 13th seeded Marin Cilic before bowing out to second seeded Djokovic in the pre-quarters.
The veteran maintained consistency in his game at Flushing Meadows and made a third round showing before losing to fourth seed David Ferrer.
Australian number one in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association), Samantha Stosur, will accompany Hewitt at the Queensland Tennis Centre.
Stosur, who conquered last year’s US Open after triumphing over Serena Williams, has also recorded great success in the Women’s Tour. She is currently ranked ninth in the WTA Premier Rankings and has reached far in several tournaments this circuit.
