Lleyton Hewitt is the new brand ambassador for 2012 Apia Sydney International – Tennis News
Apia Sydney International officials had been in talks with the former World No.1, Lleyton Hewitt, for endorsement purposes; Four-time champion has agreed to be the brand ambassador for this tournament and will take part in the
tournament as a player.
Australian tennis ace, Hewitt, has appeared ten times before in this tournament and has been crowned champion four times. He will make his 11th appearance in the Sydney Tournament coming January 8th to 14th.
He conquered the court in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005. He featured in 2010 Sydney tournament but lost to Marcos Baghdatis in quarter-finals. Baghdatis will also compete in next year tournament and both players will be returning to the arena after a break of
one year.
Hewitt was extremely ecstatic at this news and said “I’m really pleased to confirm my participation in next year’s Apia International Sydney. I approached Craig earlier in the year to see how I could help grow the event and we
agreed that I would become an Ambassador for the Apia International Sydney”.
He has been supported by the local crowd in all the tournaments and appreciated their consistent support with following words “Support that I have received at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre over the years has been fantastic
and I can’t wait to start my 2012 season in front of a packed Ken Rosewall Arena crowd.”
Tournament director, Craig Watson, was really happy with the inclusion of Hewitt and stated that Australian’s inclusion will attract more players of top notch to join the tournament and make this one of the biggest tournaments
of the world in terms of audience as well as intensity level at the court amongst elite players.
World No. 186, Hewitt, has won two Grand Slam titles in his career having won US Open in 2001 and Wimbledon in 2002. He climbed to the number one spot on 19th November 2001 and has gathered 28 titles in his era. He was
on top of his game in the late 90’s and early millennium. He has lost his touch in the recent past and has not been able to clinch major titles; his form has dipped massively but he will make sure that he plays his heart out in the Sydney tournament and prove
his worth.
The tournament will be played Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre and is expected to feature a lot of heavyweights from the field of tennis.
