Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, had a terrible couple of years at the professional platform but he is confident that the glory days will be back despite the age number exceeding the mark of 31. He was talking to the local
media reporters on the eve of Monday and stated, “The last four or five years I've had five surgeries and just haven't been able to get on that roll of playing week-in, week-out, and that's the toughest thing.”
Moreover, the 83rd ranked Aussie enjoys all the tournaments that are contested at his home soil. He will be commencing the new season at the Brisbane International which was previously contested at Adelaide, the hometown
of Hewitt. In this regard, Hewitt added, “I love playing in all the Australian tournaments and fortunately enough I've been able to win a lot of them too. This tournament was in my home town of Adelaide before it moved up here, and I always did well in Adelaide
and I've played really well in Sydney in the past, and in Kooyong, so hopefully in a few weeks time it's no different here.”
The 31-year-old Aussie has won two titles at Adelaide in 1998 and 2000. He has made seven appearances to date and holds an impressive record of 22-6. However, it will be his first appearance since the tournament has been shifted
to Brisbane. He hasn’t played in this event since 2007.
Hewitt has witnessed the most struggling time of his life in the past two years, undergoing several injuries and carrying the foot injury for the bulk of the last couple of seasons. However, the pain is over and the Aussie tennis
icon is back to full fitness; practicing regularly at the Pat Rafter Arena to be able to deliver at the warm-up event in Brisbane, starting from 30th December.
Recapping the current season’s performance in Australia, the Aussie tennis ace started at Hopman Cup in Perth lost the first two Round Rubbers before winning the final battle. He failed to clear the first stage at Apia Sydney International
but showed immense strength to conquer three players at the Australian Open; Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, Andy Roddick and Milos Raonic before losing out to the reigning champ Novak Djokovic.
So, the positivity and intent is there to bounce back into the elite category. A little bit of luck coupled with a better stamina will help him to accomplish a new landmark in 2013.
