Lleyton Hewitt positive about upcoming Australian Open
The 29-year-old Lleyton Hewitt is quite positive about the upcoming year’s opening Grand Slam, the Australian Open staring from 17th January in Melbourne. While talking to the media on Tuesday, Hewitt said that it is
hard to predict prior to the start of the event, however, he is likely to surprise everyone with his performance at the Aussie Open.
Hewitt will take part at the Kooyong Classic as a lead up to the Australian Open and will begin his tournament’s campaign on Wednesday against Mikhail Youzhny of Russia. He is recently coming of his appearance at the Hopman Cup
last week.
The Kooyong Classic field features a total of six contenders who are ranked inside the top thirteen on the tour. It includes Mikhail Youzhny, Tomas Berdych, Fernando Verdasco, Nikolay Davydenko, Jurgen Melzer, Jo Wilfried-Tsonga
and Gael Monfils.
"One of the biggest reasons for playing the Hopman Cup and Kooyong this year in particular was I am guaranteed six extremely tough matches against quality players which is important for me coming off a couple of injuries towards
the end of last year. So for me this year I think this is the perfect preparation I could have had and hopefully I can continue on this week in Melbourne like I did play in Perth last week,” said the two times Grand Slam champion on Tuesday.
The professional tennis ace from Australia had an up and down year on the tour in 2010. Apart from a single title victory in Halle, Hewitt suffered a couple of back to back injuries which also dropped his ATP rankings to as low
as number 54 in the world.
While commenting on his Australian Open chances, Hewitt refused to make any bold statement. He posted his career best result in Melbourne back in 2004 when he finished runner up to Marat Safin.
"Right at the moment I am not too focused on where I am going to get. It is the old saying of one match at a time and that is where I will be focusing on. Obviously I won't be seeded next week so it is a little bit in the hands
of the gods where you get put in the draw and I feel capable that I can go out there and cause some upsets,” added the Australian.
