Lleyton Hewitt says he would like to play against Andy Murray – Tennis News
Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, has said that he wants to take on Great Britain’s number one tennis player, Andy Murray, in the coming tournaments, as the Brit is the player to beat these days.
However, Hewitt does not want to play Murray in the first or second round of any event but at some later stages. The Australian player would be unseeded at his home Grand Slam and could face any of the top players in the earlier
rounds.
Hewitt said in a recent interview, "Murray's the main guy in the field again. You don't really want to come up against him in the first round, but it would be nice to have a shot at him at some stage."
The 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon champion had suffered a series of injuries in the recent years. He was looking good at the start of last season, as he reached the fourth round at the Australian Open but then got another career
threatening foot injury.
The Adelaide, Australia resident had a surgery on his foot and was expected to stay away from the tour for a long time but he made comeback at the French Open, losing to Slovakia’s Blaz Kavcic in the first round. He also went down
in the opening round at the AEGON Championships in Queen’s Club and the Wimbledon Championships.
Hewitt shared that it was very tough for him, as he had not completely recovered from the surgery and could not train in the best possible manner.
The Australian contender stated, "Last year was really tough coming in. I couldn't practice nearly as much as I wanted to and I couldn't do the off-court work either, which was frustrating."
Hewitt improved a lot after that, as he advanced to the title match at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. He also did a fairly good job at the London Olympics, reaching the last-16 stage and going out in a thriller against
the current world number one, Novak Djokovic.
He went on to say, "This year, so far, it's been fantastic. The foot has held up extremely well, the rest of the body's holding up well, so we'll see what happens."
The Australian number three will start his next season’s campaign at the Brisbane International and will then also take part in the Apia International Sydney before the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open.
