Lleyton Hewitt trounces Roger-Vasselin in opening round – BB&T Atlanta Open 2013
Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, got the better of the French contender, Edouard Roger-Vasselin, in straight sets at the BB&T Atlanta Open 2013 on Tuesday.
He recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory against the Frenchman to secure a second round spot at this ATP World Tour 250 series event taking place in Atlanta, United States of America.
The Australian veteran re-ignited his spark for a smooth transition from grass courts to hard courts. He required a single break of sere in each set to overpower Roger-Vasselin and book a spot in the round of 16. The contestants last encountered each other
at the AIG Japan Open Tennis four years and after securing this success, he maintained his winning record.
Seeded seventh in this event, Hewitt started his campaign in Atlanta in high spirit and held his opening serve with poise. The Aussie kept remaining serves with massive shots form his arsenal of skills. He got the breakthrough in the last game and clinched
the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Currently ranked 64th in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Hewitt kept momentum rolling in the following set. He swiftly slid his entire serves and cashed a break opportunity in the last game to seal the deal with a 6-4 win.
Overall, the 32-year-old formulated a poor first serve share of 43 per cent but superbly marked 23 out of 28 points on it. He also stuck seven aces and ended the battle with 69 points.
Up next for Hewitt is the local wild card entrant, Rhyne Williams.
The former Top 10, Mardy Fish, also sought his rhythm and advanced into the second round. He was playing just his second tournament since US Open last season due to health issues. However, the American veteran recreated his old magic and won the opening
set with a 6-4 score line against Michael Russell with ease. The match was suspended due to rain after this.
After some time, the match was resumed and the sixth seed lost his track. Russell was leading 4-2 in the second set when the match was postponed due to rain.
