Lleyton Hewitt upsets Grigor Dimitrov in round two – AEGON Championships 2013
Former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, surprised the 10th seed, Grigor Dimitrov, in straight sets at the AEGON Championships 2013 on Wednesday. He recorded a 6-4, 6-3 score line against the Bulgarian star to secure
a place in the third round at this ATP World Tour 250 series event taking place in London, United Kingdom.
The 32-year-old recreated his magic to shock the rising star in their first encounter. As a result, Hewitt edged in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-0 against the Bulgarian and reached the pre-quarters at this Wimbledon warm-up
tournament.
The Australian legend stated in a courtside interview after bagging the match, "[Today's victory] is going to help me immensely. I feel like in practice, I have been hitting the ball great. It was just a matter of doing it on the
match court. My first match here wasn't pretty, but I fought hard and got through it. That's what I needed to do. Then today it was a classy performance."
Hewitt drew the first blood in the third game to take a 3-1 lead. He then held his remaining serves with conviction and pulled out the opener with a 6-4 score line.
Currently ranked 82nd in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Hewitt maintained his intensity in the following set. He got the coveted break in the opening game and took the initial lead. The Aussie fired massive
groundstrokes to keep his entire serves and cashed another break chance in the end, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to three.
The Australian veteran clobbered a lower first serve share of 50 per cent as compared to his rival’s 59 per cent but managed to avail 18 out of 26 points on it. He spilled three double faults but neutralised the effect by firing
three aces.
Next in line for Hewitt is the 2010 titlist, Sam Querrey.
The Aussie reflected about his next match-up, “He's obviously got a big game, big serve, big forehand. He's gotten better and better each year on grass, I think. He was lucky to get through yesterday though, but tough conditions
on and off yesterday. I'm going to have to play well to win.”
The sixth seed rallied past the Slovenian challenger, Aljaz Bedene, in a three-set thriller to progress. He summed up a 7-6(11), 5-7, 7-6(5) score line against the Slovene.
