Lleyton Hewitt wins Wimbledon opener

Lleyton Hewitt has won his opening match at Wimbledon in four sets, coming from a set behind against Maximo Gonzalez to take the 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Hewitt, seeded 15th at Wimbledon thanks in no small part to his victory over Roger Federer in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle earlier this month, served 12 aces to his opponent’s one and hit 36 winners for the match, securing victory after two hours and eight minutes on court.

The former world No. 1’s victory over the Argentinian caps a mixed bag of results for the Australian men at Wimbledon on day one, with promising teenager Bernard Tomic losing in the first round to the in-form Mardy Fish, and qualifier Carsten Ball also taking his leave in the first round in the main draw.

There was better news for Peter Luczak, however, as he moves through to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time in 2010, taking advantage of a kinder draw in SW19 than he’d had at the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

After facing defending champion Rafael Nadal first up at Melbourne Park, Luczak faced a second nightmare opener for the year with defending champion Roger Federer on the other side of the net in the first round of the French Open.

Defeating 30th seed Tommy Robredo was never going to be an easy task for the world No. 83, but after dropping the first set to his higher ranked opponent, Luczak bounced back to take the match 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-2, 7-5.
