The former Lyon shot-stopper was the subject of a high-profile summer signing by Tottenham on deadline day, and was expected to replace Brad Friedel as Spurs’ first choice goalkeeper.
However, Friedel’s impressive form in front of goal kept the player on the bench, much to his unhappiness. The American was the preferred choice for manager Andre Villas-Boas, who publicly asked Lloris to be patient and wait for his chance.
This situation then led to speculation and drama regarding the player’s future at the club. Lloris publicly said that he was willing to be patient, but admitted his frustration at the lack of games.
The player has only one Premier League start to his name, along with a number of appearances in the Europa League and the Capital One Cup.
His only start came in the game against Aston Villa, which ended Friedel’s impressive record of 310 consecutive Premier League starts.
Didier Deschamps, the head coach for France’s national team backed his player’s stance, and publicly slammed Villas-Boas for wasting Lloris. The Frenchman said that a player of Lloris’s stature deserves to be playing day in and out, especially since he was
also captain for the French national team.
Villas-Boas had responded to Deschamps’ comments, and said that they did not bother him. Deschamps further responded by saying that he is also not concerned with Villas-Boas, and only concerned with how his national team captain is treated at the club.
Many former French players and goalkeepers then rushed to Lloris’ side and said that the player deserves to be playing more games. Lloris has now spoken on the matter. Speaking to French press, he said:
“Right now, we take what there is to take. Is it hard? Yes, a little. I’m training, I do the maximum, and the coach has made his choice.”
“This is difficult, and it’s also difficult to accept, but such questions must also be asked to the coach. I just stay professional. When you’re a competitor, you want to be on the pitch.”
