Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hugo-Lloris-c16408 has set his sights on the number 1 jersey after being handed his Premier League debut this past weekend against Aston Villa.
The Frenchman was a last minute high profile signing by manager Andre Villas-Boas, joining the North London club from French outfit Lyon.
Lloris had been identified as the long term replacement for current first choice keeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brad-Friedel-c7953, who is nearing retirement. The veteran American shot stopper had revealed earlier in the summer that he was considering quitting top level professional
football after this season.
Villas-Boas had to wait for his target, as Lyon and Tottenham failed to agree a transfer fee for the player. However, a deal materialised on the last day of the transfer window.
The player has not been able to play many games for the club, owing to Friedel’s impressive form in front of goal. Lloris was only just handed his first Premier League start since he joined the club, ending Friedel’s record of 310 consecutive starts in the
league.
Spurs cruised to a 2-0 victory as Lloris kept a clean sheet, his second for the club in three games.
Lloris admits that he needs more time to settle in at the club, but will be requiring regular football to play to the best of his ability. The player has provided Villas-Boas with a selection headache as the manager decides between Friedel and Lloris for
the No.1 spot. Lloris said:
"I was used to playing games every three days with Lyon. And to progress, to be effective, it's better to play every week. Over the past month, I've played only three games. It takes a little more concentration, I try to compensate, but the truth is the
game on the weekend is most important.”
"Since I joined Tottenham, I have invested 200 per cent. I show it every day in training because all this is new to me, especially because it is the best league in Europe.”
"I am getting my bearings and I hope to play more and more, to be at my best. I still need a few games to find my rhythm."
