Question:

Lobster fishery?

North American Atlantic lobsters have recently almost doubled in price. The Maine and Boston lobster fishing representatives are blaming Canadians' increased selling to European buyers but (my understanding is that) 75% of Maine-landed lobsters are shipped to Canada for marketing and the Canadian harvest (which has a restricted season) is steady. Can the reason instead be that the Maine and Massachusetts lobster harvest has started to crash from overfishing in recent years?

  1. most likely the lobster fishery is going the way of a lot of the former north atlantic fisheries.  this also explains why every couple of years there's a species of fish you never heard of in the northern hemisphere showing up in your local supermarket!

  2. I have a feeling the fish and seafood industry is crashing all over and around the world in more ways than just this.  There are shortages of seafood all over the oceans and I read today that fishermen have even started shooting animals such as walrus and seals that are competitors for the fish.  It is a sad state of affairs.  Plus, i wouldn't recommend eating seafood these days unless you are sure of it's origins because of the high levels of mercury and other toxins found in them from the pollution in the water and our Gulf is one of the worst.  Go to www.oceanconservancy.com for a link to a list of sustainable and non-toxic fish that are most safe to eat.
