  1. Go to internet options click the connections tab then click settup to settup your connection again.

  2. Clarify please; "I do not have any firewalls up that would interfere".  What does that mean?  You don't have one?  It is turned off?

If you have a firewall running of any kind shut it down and try to connect again.

  3. Go to the start menu and select Run.... Then type  cmd in the box and click OK.

At the C:\> prompt type ipconfig/all . Then press Enter. Your IP address, subnet mask and default gateway will be returned to you. Then you see your IP address, then you are receiving an internal IP address from a router or other device. The IP address that the world sees is that of the router. If you are receiving a 169.254.x.x address, this is a Windows address that generally means your network connection is not working properly. If you are having trouble with your  connection, it may be fixed by releasing and renewing your IP address. Type ipconfig /release at the prompt and press enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and press enter again. If your connection is okay, a valid IP address, subnet mask and default gateway will be returned to you after a few seconds.

But if you can browse some websites or cant access to your MSN messenger, and your Internet is working, then the computer's gateway IP is just fine. Since you can get on the Internet, the gateway or Internet connection is not part of the problem. Do you have any firewall software installed that may be blocking the site you want to connect to or MSN messenger? click MSN messenger , options - connection - advanced settings. under TCP, click test and to check if you can connect live messenger service. Click Ok. Then go to set Http proxy server and port using Internet Explorer, click test and ok.

Under connection trouble shooter, click start to begin the trouble shooter...you see green checks to trouble shoot Ip, default gateway, Host file, DNS, Proxy server, Key port and wiresless. if you see a yellow mark, that means something is wrong so you can correct it by clicking Repair button. then ok to quit.

Hope this will help.. Good luck

  4. Try to reset your ipaddress.  Go to Start and click the run button.  Typ ipconfig and click ok.
