Local Grace Min rushes past Ellen Allgurin in Girls’ Singles quarterfinal – US Open 2011
The two un-seeded players to make it so far were Swede Ellen Allgurin and American Grace Min. As the two players battled on show court 4 of USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for a place in the semi final. The American
won the match in straight sets of 7-6(1), 6-2 in one hour and thirty two minutes.
Opening the first set was Min as she had won the pitch. She opened the score board at 1-0 by smashing an ace at 40-0 and won the game without much opposition. In the following five games the players won on alternate serves, and
at this point the score board read as 3-3. In the seventh and the eighth game both the players broke back to back to even out the score at 4-4. Not wanting the other to gain an upper hand, they kept winning on their serves until the game was pushed to a tie
breaker.
In the tie breaker the players each won a point on their serves, but after that Min raced to the finish line by breaking her opponent thrice and by smashing 2 winners and a couple of aces. Grace did not setup a single break point
opportunity for her opponent to break her and with a difference of 21 points she bagged the first set and the tie breaker.
By the end of the first set the crowd kept cheering for the American, and as Allgurin served for the opening round of the second set, Min produced a raking backhand down the line, but the Russian failed to control it and was broken
in the second game. In the third game as she held her serve with a powerful forehand, Allgurin forces an error as she unable to play the shot. In the following four games the players kept on winning on their own serves until the seventh game. Almost three
break points down Allgurin was looking to hold her serve while, Min was looking to break for the match. As Allgurin was serving Min took the first opportunity and broke her Swedish opponent to win the second set and the match.
During the second set Min had smashed five winners, five aces and achieved a total of sixty seven points to bag the second and with a straight set victory secured a place in the semi final. She will now be facing qualifier Nicole
Gibbs, who is a compatriot.
