The mountain was called Six Grandfathers by the lakota Sioux.  It was renamed after Charles E. Rushmore a well-known New York lawyer during an expedition in 1885.

  The carving started in 1927 and ended in 1941 when funding ran out. The presidents would have had a body down to the mid-section.
