Mahatma Gandhi propounded his theory of Village Self Sufficiency long ago as a humanistic philosophy. it has sound economic sense behind it. you source your requirements, minimizing the distance that they have to travel, one way to reach you, and the other way for the raw materials to reach centralized manufacturers. you choose the lowest least capital intensive alternative technologies, so that investment is within the means of the local population. you produce for consumption, and not for storage and trade, minimizing intensive and excessive exploitation of natural resources.

most importantly, you humanize the production process, distance between maker and user being minimized. you avoid urban conglomerations, and keep people where they should be, in pleasant, relaxed habitats.
