Question:

Loch Ness Marathon - what's it like?

Doing this marathon for the first time this year. Looking for tips from anyone who's completed the run on how they dealt with the course. Have been told the cross winds can be a problem along with the hill at 18 miles.

Ran Paris in April 08 in sub 4 hours, so capable runner (I think). Just looking for some helpful tips before we get to Inverness...

  1. I'd look on the runners world forum for better advice I think.

The hills can be a problem, but from experience (i'm doing a very hilly Langdale again this year), if the scenery is good and you arn't chasing a PB then the scenery makes up for a struggle up a hill. After a hard marathon you can then turn round and say "I did that". City marathons tend to be flatter but one with hills - its something to brag about!

Cross wind are a problem but that comes from any run.

OK then hill again, going up is just tough, just take your time - walk if you want, its the going DOWN that causes you problems - your legs are tired and arnt used to stopping you, so take your time. Try not to fall over (I had ran the last hill at langdale with a fell runner - OK going up but going down? This guy took off and vanished while I just about managed to stay upright!)

So advice - check the runners world forum, and take it steady going down. Oh, forget PB and enjoy the run and scenery - look out for nessie too!!

  2. It's a monster run!
