Question:

Locking up luggage?

We are planning to fly into Costa Rica, near the capital, and then take short plane flights to various destinations in the country. The problem is that these flights don't allow more than 25lbs of luggage per person. What do people do in this case? Rent a cheap hotel room and lock up all their luggage in there?

  1. i agree with the "pack 25 lbs before you go" person.  if you are only going for 1 or 2 weeks, that is all you will need.  that is 50 total lbs between the two of you.

make sure you "wear" your heavy hiking shoes on the plane if you must take them, (leaving only your sandals in your bag)...and put your sweatshirt and windbreaker (that you will use in monteverde) around your waist instead of your bag, and use "trial sizes" of things.  that will make your bag weigh less.

also, i have been known to take shirts/pants that i no longer want.....just leave them in the room after you are done...and one of the workers that may need a shirt will have one.  and i get lighter and ligher each day.

you could check with the san jose airport of they have storage, that would be safe, but then you could not have your stuff where you most need it.....the mountains near monteverde and the volcano.

it would work however if you are going to tamarindo.....you could just take a school backpack even for there.

  2. why not restrict yourself to 25lbs of luggage in the first place so you can take it all with you ... I know it's not a lot but it is possible to do if you're careful about what you pack

a lot of weight in luggage (in my luggage anyway) is things like bottles of shampoo etc ... so buy yourself some little 100 ml plastic bottles or tubs and fill them with shampoo, shower gel etc ... and I buy tooth powder instead of toothpaste cos it's so much lighter

what I also do is take a small tub of washing powder (I usually use an old pill bottle or similar) so that then I can take less clothes and wash them ... this works particularly well with drip-dry stuff that dries quickly and doesn't need ironed

  3. yes get a hotel

  4. If you are using a travel agent contact them first, they should be able to tell you.  You are right about the smaller bi planes only allowing 25lbs of luggage per person.    Renting a hotel room each and every night could get expensive, and if they know you are doing it just "dock" your luggage it could cause of theft problem.  Contact the source you booked your trip with they have surely dealt with the before.  Good luck, I'd love to be going to Costa Rica!!!

  5. In the airport they will sometimes allow you to lock up luggage for cheap.  Also you will notice when flying on the small sansa, nature air flights that other people are not bringing luggage and you can bribe/discuss the possibility of you bringing on the luggage to these flights since they will not be overweight.

Travelling light is not always posisble and I disagree with the other poster having a go of you after after the fact as this is not helpful.

One last possibility is ask the hotel you are staying at before the departure if they can keep an eye on your luggage there are return it to you upon check-in.
