Lockout worrying Detroit Red Wings Todd Bertuzzi, especially Winter Classic being under threat -NHL Update
The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced November as the month to see and decide whether the lockout will have to force them to wipe out entirely the annual Winter Classic event, something which has Detroit Red Wings’ Todd Bertuzzi confused and frustrated.
Next year’s Winter Classic was set to be held in Detroit, Michigan, at the Comerica Park between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, but due to the prevailing deadlock between the league and Players’ Association, it seems highly unlikely that it will
be able to go through with.
"I feel bad for the employees that work. I feel bad for people around the rink, fans," Bertuzzi said, according to Freep.com. "Especially for us here in Detroit, we're trying to get our city back up and moving and all that. Comerica Park was going to be
packed for the week. That was just an instant injection into our city. I'd hate to see that go by."
Expected to attract over 100,000 fans, the Winter Classic was one event that the NHL looks forward to every year and every fan hopes of participating in due to the hockey culture being at its peak. Playing in snow and freezing temperatures, like it was in
Calgary, Alberta, Canada, previously, the environment just had hockey written all over it, but this time around, fans may just not get to experience it.
With his kids training to be hockey players as well, Bertuzzi is happy that his kids love the sport the way he does and hopes future events will not be locked out for them, like they were for him.
"It's a blast any time he can come down and play," Bertuzzi added. "He spends the majority of his time down at the Joe, anyway, he knows the staff well, all the guys. The guys treat him like one of the players. So it's always fun when your little boy can
come down and skate with the guys."
There is no confirmation yet whether there will be a Winter Classic or not, but players like Todd Bertuzzi have their fingers crossed for the once in a lifetime opportunity to play at an extravagant event.
