Logan McGuinness pins Meacher Major in 2nd round to defend title and streak – Boxing news
Logan McGuinness, the NABA super featherweight champion, emerged victorious in his very first title defence bout by collecting an authoritative second-round technical knockout win over more experienced Meacher Major, the former WBA Fedecaribe lightweight
champion, in a 12-round bout held on May 12, 2012.
The ring for the bout was set up at Hershey Centre situated in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and the event was promoted by the trio of Adam Harris of Hennessy Sports Canada, Don MacDonald of United Promotions and Tyler Buxton of Buxton Promotions.
The above duo headlined the Saturday night showdown whereas the non-title 10-round bout between Samuel Vargas and Arvydas Trizno co-headlined the event. Logan, 24, despite having an undefeated streak was seriously outclassed by Major’s experience.
The Canadian proud was entering in his career’s 18th bout and boasted 16 wins. He has collected just one draw decision and has nailed eight of his opponents by sheer knockout.
Since his last draw decision, Logan has evolved into a fine pugilist with high-calibre talent and is on a six-bout win streak. He has not only grabbed the NABA super featherweight gold but has also collected and successfully defended the NABA lightweight
title as well.
On the other hand, Major, 30, was in his 27th bout and boasted 20 wins with a huge 17 by knockout. Though he entered the ring with tarnished resume yet he possessed a huge knockout advantage as his KO ability was far better than the young Logan.
Since his last loss Meacher, also known as ‘Major Pain’, was on a four-bout win streak in fact he nailed three of his four opponents by knockout. The one facet that most probably boosted Logan’s motivation was the home town advantage.
From the very first second, Logan moved in aggressively and threw a huge wave of powerful fists that connected the Bahamian Major’s body and face. In the very first round, the Canadian proud made his people proud by flattening Major on the ring floor with
a huge jab.
The first-round beating was so intense that Meacher was hardly able to regain consciousness but still showed some resilience and started the second round. This did not help Major at all and Logan replicated the first round strategy.
The pummelling was so much brutal that after the passage of just two minutes and 45 seconds Meacher lost his senses and got knocked out. After the impressive title defence, Logan shared his feelings and remarked, “Our thoughts were set on the fight going
six rounds, a lot more boxing and jabbing. The minute I touched him I felt like I could hurt him, so I just went for it.”
Logan revealed, “I was wondering how much time was left and the bell went, but we were still going at it. I really wanted to catch him with a shot.” With this win Logan has collected his 17th win and Major, unfortunately, has derailed himself from the win
track and received his fifth career loss.
