I was wondering if you are able to log hours that count towards your FAA requirements in an ultralight aircraft? I am currently 17 years old and planning to obtain my PPL, but was wondering if i can do so, i might just buy one since they are so cheap. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  1. To answer your question pertaining an ultra-light part 103 type aircraft NO you cannot log time.

However if it is an Experimental or Special Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA or S-LSA) aircraft with a N-number the answer is Yes you can in the category.  There are six classes of E-LSA and five classes of S-LSA type aircraft.

    NOTE:

Gyroplanes are not eligible for a special light-sport airworthiness certificate (should be certificated as experimental).

  2. i wouldnt think so because it is proppeled but its classifed as a ul aircraft .. i dont know if they allow ula's though..

  3. Hmm, I doubt logging hours in an Ultralight would count towards a General Aviation license. You get credit for the hours nontheless, but they're not applicable to a GA license due to the fact that a true UL is an UNlicensed aircraft. And doesn't operate exactly the same way as a heavier aircraft does.

BTW, let me know where you can buy "cheap" UL aircraft...I want one! Unless you're a Beemer-drivin' rich-boy , I don't know of many ULs under 7-8k except used myself, and I can't afford even those. Even 2k would be a big stretch for me these days. I need a better career...or a bigger (silver) spoon...

    - The Gremlin Guy - been wanting to fly UL's for years, weight and money issues main reasons why not...
