Consulting the Delphic oracle is a form of argumentum ad verecundiam and the decision to go to Thebes rather than return to Corinth based upon that oracular utterance is the playing out of a false dilemma in the mind of Oedipus, one that would ultimately lead to the coming to fruition of that prophecy.
