Hoping to turn the tide of his bad run, McIlroy fell for another bogey on the first hole, losing his composure altogether.
He dropped another two shot through the front nine, missing the halfway cut by few shots.
Meanwhile Tiger Woods posted a strong comeback in the event, who, earlier, seemed as if heading towards another missed halfway cut with a sloppy opening round of two-over, 74.
Having won the event just once in his past 14 appearances, Woods does not have a penchant for the TPC Sawgrass but is hoping to post a strong finish to strengthen his confidence heading into the heat of the summers.
The former world number one posted a four-under, 68, his first round in 60’s in previous nine rounds and is hoping to jolt right into contention over the weekend.
He said, "I was trying to shoot my number today. Sixty-six was my number today. I figured that would have been a good way to go into the weekend, being probably four or five back. But I'm still with a good chance".
Woods won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill ahead of his bid in the Masters and finished for a joint 40th, his lowest finish at the Augusta National.
Despite of his struggling form and an unimpressive record at Players, Woods is hopeful of a strong performance in the event.
He carded four birdies while making the turn and fell for two bogeys, one on either nines. He pulled in two more to settle for an aggregate of two-under, tied for joint 30th.
With a mammoth purse of $9,500,000 and winner’s prize share of $1,710,000 and 600 precious FedExCup points, the event is heading for a thrilling showdown on the final day.
The course is expected to receive high winds and little rain, making it all the more difficult for the players to clinch the title.
World number two Luke Donald is also hoping to post a strong performance, if not a win in order to regain his lost crown on the OWGR.
Englishman Lee Westwood, lurking at number three on the OWGR needs a strong finish to contain his further slump on the rankings. He has not won an event in the season as yet.
