His defensive approach earned him the share of the lead, preparing a solid ground for his flight over the weekend.
Kuchar is coming out of a strong season earlier in the year with a joint third finish at this year’s Masters and is hoping to bag the elusive title before heading into the rest of the major events of the year.
He is currently poised at 16th on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) and has a strong chance of breaking into the top-10 with a victory at TPC Sawgrass.
Rookie Harris English shot a brilliant five-under, 67 on the second day against a humble two-under, 70 on the opening day to settle for an outright fourth through the halfway mark.
With four birdies on the front, English shot into contention in the afternoon, attracting press and media and hordes of spectators who followed the juvenile player for the rest of the back nine.
He dropped two shots on the back but regained his composure to pull in three birdies on the closing holes to maintain his status on the leaderboard.
Five players finished for the joint fifth on the leaderboard including the overnight leader Martin Laird who fell for an unimpressive one-over, 73 against his massive gains on the opening day where he shot a whooping seven-under, 65.
Laird lamented his choice of irons on the second day and maintained the view that his bad selection destroyed his hopes to lead the event through the halfway mark.
He said, “Yesterday I had a great number for a wedge. Today I had a horrible number. 9-iron was too much and wedge wasn't enough, so I was trying to kind of hold up a 9-iron against the wind. And just hit it middle of the green and I just didn't hit it solid
enough and the wind just ate it up and didn't get there”.
The Glasgow native had a totally different score card as compared to his impressive score card for the first day, marred by consecutive bogeys through the 18-hole stretch.
Opening with a birdie on the second hole on the front, Laird fell for his first bogey of the day at par-four, 4th but pulled in a birdie on the very next hole to make up for the loss.
