Hong Kong’s Lok Yan Poon trounced Nigeria’s Grace Gabriel in the Women’s Singles qualifying round to reserve her birth in the main round of the 2011 Canada Open Grand Prix, in Canada, on Tuesday, July 19.
Yan Poon proved her superior skills against the Nigerian in an impressive manner, as she played superb badminton and emerged victorious in the straight-set battle which ended in just 23 minutes.

She moved fast in the front-court area to execute straight and cross-court net shots, which earned her many points as her challenger could not return the perfectly placed tumbling strokes. Until the interval, the Hong Kong shuttler was leading the game with a decent gap of 11-8.
After the interval, Gabriel played a few powerful smashes and got back into the game by maintaining a good speed. Both players were then looking to earn a considerable advantage in the set. In the second game, the Hong Kong player stunned her opponent by playing an attacking game. She made no mistake in finding gaps in her rival’s court and perfectly executed her powerful smashes in the scoring areas. After the break, Yan Poon extended her lead by playing at the same speed and kept her challenger under pressure. Her aggressive play earned her the second game with a big difference of 21-11, in just 9 minutes. The concluding result of this one-sided 23-minute qualifying round match was 21-19 and 21-11.
