Lokomotiv BAKU wins the 2012 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Volleyball news
The final of the 2012 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup- Women took place recently between Azerrail as well as Lokomotiv BAKU on April 1.
The Azerbaijan city of Baku was playing host to the title match of the tournament. The venue of the competition was the Heydar Aliyev Sports and Concert Complex that housed a total of 5,000 spectators that had come to watch the two teams clash.
The clash between the two sides took five heated sets to reach its close in order to determine Baki BAKU as the winner of the championship. Despite the thrilling five set win, the victorious squad opted for a golden set the was played intensely by both the
sides.
However, like the match, Azerrail ended up on the losing side of the frame.
The first set of the match was a tug of war between the two sides as one side got the lead while the other kept trailing behind till Lokomotiv overtook their opponents and started dominating the courts.
Before long, Lokomotiv set the theme for the rest of the match and went on to seal the deal on the opening frame of the game. The rest of the four sets of the final went the same way as the first set with both the sides displaying good volleyball.
The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 20-25 and 13-15. On the other hand, the golden set ended with a 15-13 score in favour of Lokomotiv.
The golden set of the match started off with Azerrail take a leading position at the early stages and building up on the lead that they had. Azerrail was able to stretch their advantage further to 12-10 but before their opponents could go out of reach, the
Lokomotiv squad put on a spurt of speed that rocketed them off to close in the gap and get into a lead themselves. It was only a matter of time after that Lokomotiv also got themselves the hold of the golden set of the match.
The title of the Most Valuable Player of the match went to Nancy Metcalf of the winning team.
