Lol, has somebody ever said this to you?

i was wearing a polo shirt, and my friend mistook the polo mallet for a whip or crop, and she started saying that it was really mean to hit a horse like that! i had to explain to her what it was, it was funny!

That's pretty funny!  I haven't had that happen, but I have had a few of my non-horse work friends ask why in the summer they sometimes see some horses in fields with blindfolds on.  I gently explain they're fly masks.  Then we both laugh.

LOL!!!  But I laugh at people like that anyway.  People who say things like that generally produce horses that are spoiled and dangerous. Often the only way they can work with horses is to have someone else train them and often keep retraining them after they spoil them rotten again.

No, but I have had people see a crop in my car or bag  at work and act like I was a horse abuser!  Ditto to the others on correct horsemanship.  Of course I am like...yes....I beat horses to death with a tap of a  1 inch leather strap....right through their thick skin and sinew....I almost lost another when I tapped that mare with the 3-inch string on my dressage whip.

Hahahah...my best friend grew up across from a horse farm.  Her family also asked me one summer about the "blindfolds."  hahaha....I, of course, had to explain that it was a large mesh material, etc.  I said, "Don't you think they'd be moving and acting a LOT stranger if they couldn't see???!!"  HEHEHE.

Isn't it amazing how ignorant people often become so vehement about their opinions?

Just yesterday I was in our local tractor supply store.  This older couple and (I assume) their grandson were playing with the whips exclaiming how mean it was to whip a horse.  I was walking by and the young guy said "hey, do they really whip a horse with these" to his grandpa as he flicked a buggy whip.  I couldn't help but respond as I was walking by "smart people don't - smart people use them as communication devices to give direction and get attention from their horses".  He commented that I must love my horses.

That made me feel good - because it only takes one or a few people who are unkind, disrespectful, lack understanding of how to effectively communicate with horses or be just plain mean to give all horse people a bad aura.   I felt as if I had set one ignorant person straight so he could perhaps tell a poor horse handler from a true horseman or -woman if he should see one.  Also because he may not pass judgement on a person if they simply were carrying a whip.

It makes me very angry when an ignorant person passes  judgement without truly understanding all the facts.  I hear daily about people fighting for things that will eventually cause a lack of natural balance - people turning hundreds of helpless mink free to die by being eaten by coyotes or fox is a good example of a recent article I read.

So good for you - I hope you explained it in a postive manner to that person.

lol, but that person should know that crops actually do not hurt horses at all. whips dont hurt horses unless used violently. Be sure to tell her that :P
