Here it is:

1) 3 friends go out to town with ten pounds each.

2) they buy a radio for £30 (£10 each)

3) the manager tells the sales man, who sold the radio, that the radio is actually £25 and gives the sales man £5 to give it back to the friends.

4) the sales man gives back £3 and keeps £2

How much did the friends pay for the radio?

I think it is £27 (£25 for the radio and £2 to the sales man) the £3 they had back, making a total of £30.

The silly builder (or not so silly) claims that : where does the sales man get the two pounds? we must have paid out £29, so what happened to the £1? No matter how much I try to convince him that the two pounds come from the original ten pounds, he doesn't believe me.

What do u think?

  1. not a clue sorry.

  2. lol confuseing but i would say £27 x

  3. aaah too much confusion for a simpleton like me

  4. well you could also look at it this way much like the guy on his way to St. Ives

they "PAID" 30 no matter how you slice it they paid 30.

they were "REFUNDED" 3  just how i look at riddles sometimes its all in the wording

  5. oh my god!!!

ive heard this before and i cant remember how it went! and now ive heard it again my brain has gon into like mush lol

    ok ok ive got it

30 pounds was paid by the customers.    3 pounds was refunded. meaning the girls spent 27 pounds,

They we are led to think that the two pounds that the salesman has are to be added onto 27 to make 30 (when it actually makes 29)

BUT..... you are to subtract the 2 pounds from the 27 because it was 5 pounds that was given back to the salesman.   (3 pounds plus 2 = 5)

  6. you're right.. that doesnt even make sense his way, what does he mean wheres does the sales man get two pounds? its says he kept it from the 5 that was left over after the sale price.

  7. It doesn't matter where the £2.00 comes from. Just focus on the sums.

So, £30.00 - £3.00 (which the salesman gave back to them) = £27.00

    You are correct.

  8. I think your builder is trying to say this:

Each person put in £10 for their share of the £30 radio.

The sales men was given £5 by the manager to give back to the men as they had been charged wrong.

The sales man could not split £5 easily between 3 men.

So he kept £2 and gave each man £1 back.

The men who bought the radio now think that they have each paid £9 towards the radio. 3 x £9 = £27

Plus the £2 that the salesman kept = £29.

    Where is the missing £1.

It is just the way the story is told that makes the £1 seem to go missing. The way you have solved it is the correct way.

  9. 27 or 30 too coz in #3 it says that"the salesman gives 5 to the friends

  10. its easy 27 pounds coz they paid 30 pounds at first they where ment to get the 5 pounds back but the man only gave them 3 pounds so 30 pounds - 3pounds

  11. They get a pound back each which means they have each paid nine pounds. (30 - 3 = 27) (27 / 3 = 9)

    The salesman kept 2 pounds out of the 27 they paid. (27 - 2 = 25)

    The radio cost 25 pounds.

Its just the way it is said to make it seem like there is a missing pound

you are exactly right in your working out

  12. They payed £28

    25 + 3 = 28, then the sales man kept £2, which makes £30

  13. I'm with you, because I don't understand the builder's interpretation of the riddle.

Could you possibly word it a bit better? I understand how you think it's £27, because I do, but I don't understand the £1 bit.

  14. it cost £25 pound but the sales man kept £2 so they actually ended up paying £28 for it.

there is no missing pound, they handed over £30 were refunded £1 each ...salesman kept £2

    £30 minus £2 =£28

ps  me and clare 89 are correct lol

pps, tell that builder to get back to work and stop giving me a bloody headache lol all this thinking.
