I have fallen in love with classic lolita, and gothic also. Though I suspect owning one would be impsoble. What I really wanted to know was what keeps the shirts' and dresses' circular shape. What material is it?

  1. I Love them too!! *high-five*~

  2. Im not sure what you mean but I'll take a whack at answering it

the bodice (that's the top) keeps its shape due to boning, which is small strips of bone- usually whale bone- sewn vertiically into the bodice, if you've ever touched a corset or antique dress, that what the stiff part is that you'd feel.

as for the skirt, it's shape is kept by layers of tulle or crinolin- both of which are stiff fabrics underneath the dress that poof it out and keep it rounded.

the dress itself can be whatever fabric.

    hope that helped

  3. Its Boning and Tulle. Boning keeps it fitted and hour glass shape . Tulle keeps it puffy and round.

  4. Corsets and boning and not often used in Lolita.  Although I'm sure some people do use them to help them fit into smaller brand sizes it's not a requirement.

There are two basic skirt shapes which are highly dependent on the style of Lolita.

The most sought after shape is the Bell-Shape.  This shape is defined by a circular shape at top come down in an even curve.  This shape is used my most sects of Lolita, including your love, Gothic Lolita.  The petticoat you would be looking to employ would have a full shape at the top and even out toward the bottom.  Materials commonly used are tulle and organza although both or usually paired with a thin cotton skirt on the inside at the very least to relieve problems with skin irritation from the abrasive materials.

The second shape is used in more mature styles such as Classic Lolita.  This shape sometimes referred to as the princess petticoat has a more triangular shape and less definition at the waist.  This petticoat would be used in dresses that have princess seams and less fabric at the waist line and more at the bottom.  The petticoat would also employ princess seams and would most likely be layered with less organza/tulle at the top and more at the bottom.

It is very possible to own Lolita dresses in the states.  I, myself own several and regularly attend meet-ups with other girls who like to dress in Lolita.

  5. We don't usually wear corsets, boning has nothing to do with it. Some of us wear corsets, but I think the majority of us don't bother. I'm not really sure what you mean by shirts, was it a typo and you meant skirts?

We wear petticoats/panniers made that can be made of many different kinds of materials. The most popular is tulle. They give a different shape and don't move as much as square-dancing petticoats, and square dancing petticoats are usually considered bad to wear with lolita.

It's not at all impossible to own a loita dress, there are many girls who dress in lolita fashion regularly all over the world. I know of plenty in the US and Europe, it isn't just Japan. I live in the US and I personally dress lolita regularly, and have friends who do as well. We shop online or sew our own clothing.

  6. it might be ruffles or the way the skirt is folded when it was stitched, like it's hem.
