London 2012 Olympics in need of wi-fi hot spots for next year
It has been recently revealed that the London 2012 Olympics will cause a stress on the cell phone network in the city. This could lead to problems accessing the internet while people are on the move during the games.
A total of 1 million people are expected to visit the city next year to be a part of the Olympic Games. Visitors and fans will be accessing the internet during their stay and the crunch could lead to a minor crisis. In order to avoid connectivity problem,
wi-fi hot spots need to be created. These spots will only solve the problem if they are present in the thousands throughout the city during the time the Olympic Games take place in London.
The organisers of the Olympic Games have made it known that they require companies that can take up the task of setting up the hot spots. For this purpose, Virgin Media is interested as they are bidding for the contracts that will allow them to set up a
central London wi-fi network for public use.
The chief executive, Neil Berkett, made the following comments regarding the issue: "The mobile networks are already facing a capacity crunch that, without widespread, consistent wi-fi, will leave people unable to do the most basic things such as keeping
up to date with the latest travel situation and getting directions while out and about."
It will be cheaper to setup a wi-fi network as opposed to a 3G network, which is expensive to put up. The wi-fi network also has the capacity to take the load of a large amount of internet traffic. It is hoped that the wi-fi setups will solve the internet
traffic problems during the Olympic Games next year.
With such a large scale project, the LOCOG will be hoping to cut costs and keep the expecdeture to the minimum, while making sure that all the basics are covered. The city of London is hoping to pull off the best Olympic Games it has hosted to this point.
With the London riots cast a negative image, the Olympics organisers do not want to give anybody any chance to point out loopholes or errors in the organisation of the Olympic Games. Therefore, it has become vital that the issue of the internet traffic be
resolved by setting up wi-fi hot spots all over the city as soon as possible.
The Olympic Games will be coming to the city of London next year for a third time. After having hosted the grand international sporting event next year, London will become the first city in the world to have done so thrice.
