London 2012 Paralympic Games Competition Schedule goes public
With only almost eight months to go until the Opening Ceremony, this year’s Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) have made available the full sports schedule for the 2012 Paralympic Games which are to
take place in London and will start on the 29th of August 2012.
The event will be an eleven day competition with nearly 4, 200 athletes from 150 countries taking part in twenty different sports and more than 500 gold medals will be up for grabs. The schedule has been accepted by the International
Paralympic Committee (IPC), and the stakeholders for every venue in London have been informed. Moreover, relevant international sporting federations have also approved the schedule for the event which will be watched worldwide.
The IPC President, Sir Philip Craven said, “The London 2012 Paralympic Games will quite simply be ‘Sport like Never Before’. Our elite athletes will captivate billions around the world, will inspire millions and ultimately lead
to societal change and help alter perceptions of what can be achieved by a person with impairment”.
This will be a spectacular showcase for Paralympic sport with so many athletes from different parts of the world taking part in the event in London, it will make this event the biggest and potentially the best Paralympic Games
with more athletes and teams due to compete than at any previous Games held in the past.
The first competition is the Archery competition which is a five day event and will take place at the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, South East London. The event will test Skill, concentration and nerves of the participants
and will be displaying these attributes to encourage the youth to take part in the upcoming Paralympic games.
Athletes will compete in three categories that are: Standing (ST), Wheelchair 1 (W1) and Wheelchair 2 (W2). The W2 athletes’ impairments have a reduced amount of an impact on their ability to compete at Archery than a W1 athlete.
Moreover, there are medal events for both the Compound and Recurve bow as well for individuals and teams, all promising plenty of accuracy and excitement at The Royal Artillery Barracks.
