London Olympics 2012: Roger Federer resolute to face Djokovic or Murray in the final – Tennis News
Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, returns to the All-England-Club after the winning the pinnacle of tennis, Wimbledon Championships earlier this month. The reigning world number one anticipates meeting either Novak Djokovic or
Andy Murray in the finals. The Great Games includes the participation of the elite tennis professionals from all corners of the world, making it as prestigious as any Grand Slam.
After the withdrawal of defending gold medallist, Rafael Nadal, due to his aggravated knee tendonitis, the Olympic field will prove to be very entertaining for the tennis viewers worldwide. The Swiss Maestro’s Wimbledon victory
places him on the number one spot. He has an unrivalled winning record and experience at grass courts and against all his contenders. Currently amongst the three, Federer has the shortest pathway to the top of the Olympic podium. As the draws for the first
round unveil, Federer will be facing Alejandro Falla and later a potential match with Julien Benneteau. Federer has an edge over both the players, as he has previously defeated them in straight sets.
In a press conference with the media Federer said, “Novak has a good chance but so does Andy Murray after the Wimbledon he had. I'm not looking too far ahead and I hope to face one of them in the final. I do believe winning
Wimbledon will help with my confidence, it's been a great couple of weeks, and I don't mind being the favourite because that is when I play better.”
For the second most desirable champion for the gold medal, Djokovic will be facing talented players like Juan Martin Del Potro and Gilles Simon. In the final quarter, the world number two will expect to face the former world
number one, Andy Roddick, who is nursing a painful shoulder. The Serb had a classic start this season but faced a bitter defeat at the French Open and finally at semis of the Wimbledon Championships. At the London Games, he will be the defending bronze medallist.
The key contender is the British number one, Andy Murray. From the Scot’s recent history, it is evident that he has not won a Major tournament in his career neither getting a chance Federer or Djokovic. However, the third
seed remarkably improved his performance this season by competing as Wimbledon finals against the Swiss legend.
In the bottom half of the Olympic, Murray will receive tough competition at hands of Stanislas Wawrinka. Previously the Swiss number two defeated the Brit at the US Open. Nevertheless, Andy maintains the lead of 6-4. There
is a less chances for Wawrinka to upset him in the initial round of the tournament.
In Nadal’s absence, Murray and Djokovic have a good chance to vouch for the winning titles against Federer. Both players might meet each other for the semi-final but nothing rests in stone and players should be ready to face
the unusual upsets.
