London Airport to experience heavy traffic because of Olympics
It has recently been revealed by the London City Airport that the capital of England is expected to experience a large amount of boost in passenger traffic during the time of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The city of London will not only feel the burden of travellers during the time of the Games, the passengers will start pouring in as the Olympic Games draw nearer.
The chief executive of the London Airport, Richard Gooding, commented on the issue in the following manner, “It's encouraging to see increasing passenger movements in what has undoubtedly been a challenging period for the travel industry. We have invested
over £7m in the terminal over the past year, extending the Central Search area, as well as other improvements, to ensure that the airport continues to deliver the time saving proposition promised, even with an increased number of passengers. We expect passenger
figures to remain strong ahead of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.”
The increase in passenger is expected not just because of the Olympic Games which will attract thousands of spectators but also because of the rise in air travel that the London Airport is experiencing annually.
The increase in the number of travellers from the last year to the current one was 7.6%. This means that the number of passengers travelling through the London Airport was initially 2.8 million but it rose to over three million.
There have been some talk of introducing special terminals for the Olympic Games so that it helps in reducing the jam of people who will start pouring in as the Games draw nearer.
The peak time of the passenger traffic will be the month of July as the Games are scheduled to start from the July 27. The Olympic Games will last until August 12 and the Airport is expected to deal with the heavy traffic once again as the spectators depart
for their homes.
The city of London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games in the year 2005. The other prospective cities for the Games included Moscow and New York City.
