Having found a citation for bravery in Gazette of a Major in 1st World War on search results 5th March 1918 for Edmund Powne Cardell cannot understand the abbreviations - as not sure if this is right one do not want to purcahse relevant copy of the paper - any ideas what B.F.A.Bev.....,Gen.Last?Capt etc. might mean? I know I might have to purchase the paper but if anyone out there can help it would be appreciated. Many thanks Rene

  1. Forgive my ignorance here, but the pages of the London gazette are free so if you bring up an image of the page online it will still be the same as the original paper and not say anything different, so why exactly would you want to BUY a hard copy that you can see for free and save as a PDF ?

I've had a look at the page in question and the actual entry states:

    Awarded the Military Cross

    T./Capt (A./Major) Edmund Powne Cardell, R.F.A.

    Nothing more, nothing less.

RFA usually stands for Royal Fleet Auxillary, Royal Navy.

  2. If you have the regimental number rank and name,Inst Ect of the person you can contact Public Records Office on the internet.www.p.r.o.co.uk I beleive.Or you can ring them or visit them(near Kew Gardens). They can get you all his military records and they can also tell you what medals he was awarded. You can also find out from them how to obtain a copy of the extract from the London Gazette.

  3. As far as I can tell B F A stands for Bachelor of Fine Arts but BEV so far have not found an answer there is always the chance that BEV stands for the collage where they got their degree
