London - Guildford commute - what's it like?

I'm thinking of doing a part-time postgrad in Surrey, but due to constraints I'll have to stay in London (around Waterloo where I can get a direct train)

Is it doable?

Looks like about 1h15m commute time if your lucky (no track work) and a zone 1 to at least zone 7 fare. But hey, you can read/study during most of that time.
