London Irish sign young fly half Steve Shingler
London Irish have proclaimed that they will be signing Steven Shingler, the young Welsh fly half prospect.
The 19-year-old fly half will be moving to London Irish on the basis of a two year contract, before the next season starts.
It was reported earlier that Steve Shingler will be leaving Scarlets and Llanelli at the end of the current season, and it was reckoned to be a rumour then. But Anthony Buchanan, Llianelli director of rugby’s statement cleared the confusion. He said that
he is sad to see his 19 year old precious player leaving the club. He has been titled as kicker of international standard.
Shingler had scored five penalties in a league match against Camathren Quins last week and then revisited the Park and scored four more penalties at their home and earned a 24-9 British and Irish Cup victory against Melrosela this weekend.
Shingler played a real role in giving the victory to Llianelli, with his last five minutes penalty from just inside the opponent’s half. Critics say that he had wind coming from his back, but the coaches think differently. Shingler just stepped two paces
back and then shot the ball to bisect the uprights from a huge distance of 50 meters.
Buchanan said, “That’s international kicking, to be honest.” Appreciating his overall performance he added, “He kicked five penalties in our win in Munster that were just out of this world. You can’t call it anything else but international standard kicking.”
London Irish coach noticed this brilliant performance and spotted him right there. Tony Booth made a quick decision and offered Shingler a place where he should be.
He said, “Steven is a player with a huge amount of potential, and he will be a great attribute for our squad.”
Tony added, “We feel working with the coaching team here at London Irish will help to propel Steven to the next level of his game.”
After this offer, a new door opened for more signings and Llanelli is now picking up players from Scottish borders.
