Roger Federer and Serena Williams draws announced for the Olympics first round – Tennis News
London Olympics 2012 announced the most awaited draws for the first round of the tournament. In the men’s single the reigning world number one, Roger Federer will be combating the Colombian Alejandro Falla, whilst the American
powerhouse, Serena Williams, will be contesting against Jelena Jankovic. The Olympic draws were held on Thursday, two days prior to the event.
The Swiss legend is amongst the favourite contenders of the gold medal for London Olympics. Recently, Federer won the Wimbledon Championships at the courts of All-England-Courts. In the women’s category, Williams has being
in sublime run of form and managed to secure the world number four spot after defeating the world number two, Agnieszka Radwanska. She is competing with the former world number one Jelena Jankovic in the opening brawl on Saturday afternoon.
Federer, with his fellow Swiss player, Stanislas Wawrinka, and the Williams Sisters will be the defending gold medallist in the doubles category. However, the former world champions will be facing tough competition in the
singles category for the earlier rounds.
The Colombian contender, Falla, gave the 30-year-old a tough competition during the initial sets of the first round at the Wimbledon Championships. However, Federer, picked momentum and defeated him by 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6,
6-0. The 51ST ranked, Falla, encountered the Swiss professional in five matches but had never beaten the odds.
Falla in a press conference stated, "He is the favourite whenever he plays. I know him well and he knows me well too. I'm going to have to play my best tennis if I am going to have a chance to win, but he's Roger and he's
just won Wimbledon for the seventh time here."
The next top seeded players include Novak Djokovic and the Wimbledon finalist, Andy Murray. They might be facing each other for the semi-finals of the London Games. Djokovic will be defending his bronze medal this season
and he currently, faces Italian Fabio Fognin.
In the women’s category, the former world number one, Jankovic, awaits the America. In nine matches between the two, Williams takes a lead of the head-to-head score of 5:4. If Williams’ game plan is not as powerful as the
Wimbledon then there is a fair chance for Jankovic to upset her in the first round.
The Wimbledon finalist, Radwanska, might encounter the Russian beauty Maria Sharapova in penultimate round of the London Games 2012.
