London Olympics 2012: Lee Chong Wei outplays Chen Long in semi-final with his superb tactical play
Lee Chong Wei, the most impressive shuttler of Malaysia, proved his mettle in Men’s Singles semi-final when he put up staggering show of his elite technical and tactical skills and easily overpowered China’s Chen Long at London Olympics 2012 in England,
on Friday, August 3.
The 29-year-old Chong Wei, who is positioned at number two in Men’s Singles world ranking, was almost at his best when he put up thrashing show of flawless badminton and stunned his lower ranked Chinese opponent by playing with impressive rhythm.
Chong Wei, who is top seed in the tournament, played remarkable badminton as he did not show any sign of nervousness on court and also remained composed all the way to end up the battle in straight games with a superb margin.
The third seeded Long, in the meanwhile, could not put up strong resistance as he was visibly under pressure and lost the match to his higher ranked Malaysian rival without showing his brilliance at any stage.
After winning the match with a 21-13 and 21-14 margin, Chong Wei said, “The strategy was to take the first set and not allow Chen Long to dictate the play. I had a great start and he was left wondering what hit him I guess.”
While talking about those people who have been showing their disbelief about Chong Wei’s participation and good performance at Olympics after recovering from injury, the shuttler said that he proved all of them wrong.
He added, “But I proved them wrong and the win today is something that gives me added confidence to take on Lin Dan this Sunday.”
Malaysia’s National coach Tey Seu Bock appreciated the impressive performance of Chong Wei.
He said, “It was a good performance, very disciplined and focused. Chong Wei has proven that he is made out of sterner stuff and the whole of Malaysia should be proud of him.”
Chong Wei is the first Malaysian shuttler who has reached into the final of Olympic Games for two consecutive times in Men’s Singles category.
Considering his recent form at Olympics, Chong Wei stands a good chance to win Malaysia’s first ever gold medal at Olympic Games.
