London Olympics 2012: Marc Zwiebler beats Dmytro Zavadsky in Men’s Singles Group K clash
Germany’s in-form player Marc Zwiebler continued his winning run in Men’s Singles Group K as he defeated Ukraine’s Dmytro Zavadsky to advance into the knockout stage at London Olympics 2012 on Tuesday, July 31, at Wembley Arena, London.
The 14th seeded Zwiebler, who is has been ranked at number 18 in Men’s Singles world placements, had to work extra hard while playing against his lower ranked Ukrainian opponent and managed to win the fight in rubber games.
The in-form Zwiebler lost the opening game as he failed to play dominating badminton. However, he powered back into the match and nailed the following games to win the battle with a decent margin.
In the meanwhile, the un-seeded Zavadsky put up remarkable show of attacking badminton as he played with courage and took the first set. But he could not dominate the pace in the following games and lost to his higher ranked German rival in three sets.
Zwiebler started the opening set in a nervous manner as he committed unforced mistakes which helped his opponent to take a reasonable lead until the mid-game interval.
After the break, the higher ranked German shuttler tried his level best to close the gap by increasing his speed on court but failed to break the rhythm of Zavadsky and lost the set with a margin of 17-21.
In the following set, it was Zwiebler who changed his tactics on court and also dictated the pace of rallies which assisted him to grab a wonderful lead until the one-minute break.
After the interval, the impressive German continued his elevated play on court without showing any mercy to Zavadsky and took the set with a superb 21-10 score on the board.
In the decider, both shuttlers played with precision and also avoided unforced errors until the end of first half and remained unable to take a clear lead.
After the break, the German shuttler played attacking badminton by anticipating his opponent’s shots and managed to take the game with a 21-16 score on the board.
The spirited Zwiebler remained successful in beating Zavadsky in rubber games with an interesting score of 17-21, 21-10 and 21-16.
