London Olympics 2012 sponsor Dow Chemical under fire again
The London 2012 Olympic Games sponsor, Dow Chemical that has been under huge criticism since the partnership with the Olympic Games, has experienced another blow as its secret trading of banned products in India has come to light.
It has been revealed that the Dow Chemical company has been carrying out the sales of banned products in India by making use of a confusing net of third parties that had made it difficult to trace the link back to the company. The company was banned from selling products in India through a factory owned by it which is the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC).
Union Carbide was responsible for a gas leak that took place in Bhopal back in 1984 that caused the deaths of thousands of people. Hundreds of local residents died on the spot but the after effects of the toxic gas prevailed in the region and caused further deaths and birth defects for many years to come.
Union Carbide was purchased by Dow Chemical later on and some of the compensation of the tragic incident was paid off. However, the Indian government as well as the local people were not satisfied with the amount paid and demanded more money which has not been paid so far.
Therefore, the partnership of Dow Chemical with the Olympic Games that proclaims itself to be eco-friendly and the greenest Games that the world has ever seen, has been subject of much criticism. Dow Chemical will be offering its services to provide a giant cloth wrap to be hung around the Olympic Park.
Dow Chemical has released the following statements after the documents about its illegal dealings came to light. “None of the alleged business transactions cited as violating the 1992 court order involved products or technologies that are covered by the court order which only applied to UCC properties in India. It did not apply to UCC products or technologies acquired overseas and brought into India by other separate companies,” the statement read.
As one of the Olympic Games key sponsors, Dow Chemical has been awarded the deal to provide the fabric wrap for seven million pounds.
