Federer believes Bhupathi and Bopanna will the secure good rankings this summer season – Tennis News
World number one, Roger Federer is quite optimistic that Indian players like Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna have bright chance to win a medal in the Olympic Games at the courts of All England Club. However, the Swiss professional
is ignoring the chaos faced by the Indian tennis in the start of the season.
Federer in a press conference informed the media, “I would love to play any of the Indian teams, but Bopanna and Bhupathi are closer to us in the draw”.
The conflict arose when Bhupathi and Bopanna refused the India Tennis Association’s (ITA) decision to split up. They asked one of them to complete in the Olympics with Leander Paes. ITA had refused to allow Bhupathi and Bopanna
play as a duo earlier on but eventually agreed on sending the two as one of the doubles team for the London Olympics.
Paes, India’s number one male tennis player, was then paired with the underdog, Vishnu Vardhan, and the unseeded pair will contest their initial encounter at the Olympics against the Dutch tennis professionals, Robin Hasse
and Jean-Julien Rojer in the men doubles category.
India’s seventh-seeded tandem of Bhupathi and Bhupathi will now contest against Max Mirnyi and Alexander Bury of Belarus.
Federer further stated that Bhupathi and Paes would make an excellent couple in the doubles. Nonetheless, he also commended Bopanna as a high-quality player. In his expert opinion, the India team has fine chance to grab a
medal.
The Swiss team comprises of the legendary Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka. Federer won the gold medal in men’s doubles category with Stan in Beijing Olympics 2008. He further added, “Obviously winning the Olympic gold was one of
the most incredible feelings I've ever had on a tennis court. I hope that we can do well again. We have not played much doubles of late. Thank God we are seeded, that helped us out a little bit in the draw,"
However, Federer after his seventh Wimbledon titles is the world favourite for the Olympic gold medal. His chances have tremendously increased after the withdrawal of the defending champion, Nadal. The primary focus for the
Swiss Maestro is to maintain an emphatic record in the men’s singles.
