London Olympics: Joachim Fischer, Christinna Pedersen claim a spot in Mixed Doubles quarter-finals
Denmark’s Joachim Fischer-Christinna Pedersen surged into quarter-finals of London Olympics after beating Robert Mateusiak-Nadiezda Zieba in group match at Wembley Arena on July 30, 2012.
This Group B match kept both teams head-to-head for three exhausting sets before ending with concluding figures of 21-9, 14-21 and 21-17.
World Number three pair Joachim-Christinna secured a 2-1 win and setup final encounter with Shintaro Ikeda-Reiko Shiota in the group stage.
The Danish campaigners will surely utilise their valuable experience of past as they have thrashed the Japanese duo earlier in 2011 World Super Series Finals.
They have been in prime touch as they proved themselves invincible in first two matches of this ongoing mega event.
Though, their latest success against the Polish team was not an easy win but still it has boosted their confidence before the knockout rounds.
Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen, who hold fourth spot in tournament ranking, took off in perfect manner as they bagged first set with a significant difference of twelve points.
They started the beating right from very first stroke and kept their rivals at lower end until last shot was played.
In first half, they mounted pressure with five uninterrupted rallies and cornered their competitors by reaching at dominating score position of 11 at half time.
Things got even worse for Robert and Nadiezda after the interval as their opponents cast them out with an overwhelming total of 21-9.
However, they managed to bring the contest to right balance by clinching vital match point in the very next game.
They did not show any sign of confusion after first set loss and played impeccable badminton to save their honour.
They set the ball rolling by gathering three consecutive points just before the one-minute break and doubled the lead in second half to finish this segment of the battle with favourable result of 21-14.
Third set was expected to be a nerve-racking tussle as both teams were standing on same level with one win each but Joachim-Christinna exhibited superior badminton skills in crucial moments.
The Danish pair struck hard when it mattered and cemented their spot in round of eight by registering 21-17 margin.
