London Olympics: Mohammad Ahsan, Bona Septano to reserve berth in Men’s Doubles quarter-finals
Men’s Doubles experts Mohammad Ahsan-Bona Septano kept Indonesia’s hope alive as they marched into quarter-finals of London Olympics on Monday, July 30, 2012.
They unseated Ko Sung Hyun-Yoo Yeon Seong in group match at Wembley Arena by registering a favourable result of 24-22 and 21-12.
This was their sixth meeting and the Indonesian pair claimed their first win over the prime Korean team.
The World Number six duo of Ahsan-Bona, was under huge pressure after losing their opener in the mega event, revived their lost chemistry and ensured their presence in round of eight.
Though, they faced trouble in the opening part of the battle but they showed superb coordination and emerged as victors.
In first set, both contenders made every effort to gain an initial advantage as they chased each other all the way to game point situation.
Neither team could establish an unassailable lead until final moments but the twosome of Ahsan and Bona struck hard in the end and pocketed the first match point.
In first half, they trod carefully and this cautiousness resulted in a tight margin before the announcement of break.
However, they played fearlessly in third quarter of the set and got into a commanding position but a couple of mistakes brought them down again in the final stage.
The fourth seeded Korean pair counter-balanced the situation with few back-to-back rallies and stayed close to their competitors but this short campaign was not enough to avoid a 22-24 defeat in the first set.
World Number four partnership of Sung Hyun and Yeon Seong failed to meet the expectations of their supporters in the following game.
This time they proved themselves lazy as they could not move swiftly across the court and dropped some valuable points.
They trailed behind in most part of the first half and allowed their challengers to place an indomitable total of 11 points before the mid-game break.
The twosome of Ahsan and Bona capitalised this initial advantage in second half of the set and locked the honour with great ease.
They made the difference with a few successive points in the third quarter and then left their opponents far behind with an overwhelming margin of 21-12.
