London Olympics: Team USA aims to bring glory home – Tennis News
United States has secured the highest rating in tennis with 17 medals in total, including ten gold ones. The London Olympics 2012 will be a tough competition for all the leading tennis players to get a chance to compete with
each other at the courts of Wimbledon at the All England Club.
Topping the world charts in the women’s doubles, are the former world champions the Venus and Serena Williams. The renowned US tennis coach Nick Bollettieri stated:”The Williams sisters should never be counted out.” Earlier
this year, their performance graph was considerably lower; however, their emphatic triumph at the Wimbledon Championships women’s doubles has restored their chances as the hot favourite for the Olympics gold.
Next are the twin brothers in the doubles category, Bob and Mike Bryan. They have not won any gold medal but are amongst the top seeded players of the tournaments. They will be defending their bronze medal in the London Games
this season and adding to their advantage, the American twins will be facing many underdog duos.
On the contrary, the men’s and women’s singles has a tougher rivalry.
In the men’s category, legends like Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray compete amongst each other for all the leading tournaments, leaving very little room for the American champions.
The most seasoned athlete representing USA, Andy Roddick, is currently ranked 22 on the tennis charts. The American old horse showed remarkable performance and won the Atlanta Tennis Champion securing the 32nd title
of his career earlier this month.
His coach Brad Gilbert informed the media: “this will most likely be Roddick’s last crack at his first Olympic medal. In the next four years it’s likely Andy will hang up his racket and retire, which could inspire a big push
on his part at what might be his last appearance at The All England Club.”
Similarly, in the women’s category the Williams dominate the show.
Serena Williams’ performance showed a remarkable increase after her fifth Wimbledon title. Currently, she is number four on the world tennis charts. Williams in a press conference with the media said: “I think growing up
as tennis players we always dream of winning Grand Slams and doing well at tournaments like Wimbledon. For me of every tournament I've won, I enjoy my gold medal probably the most”.
Therefore, the London Olympics will have great chances for United States sports-stars crowned as gold medallists in tennis. All of them are competing at a high level and the victory does not seem far-fetched!
