London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal gives new dimensions to badminton in India
Saina Nehwal, who is undoubtedly the best female shuttler in the history of India, grabbed a bronze medal in Women’s Singles category at the London Olympics and she expects that her achievement will bring change in badminton in the country.
The World Number Five Saina, who has been working really hard to tackle with the power packed Chinese line-up of female shuttlers, has gained confidence after winning a bronze medal at Wembley Arena which is India’s first ever Olympic medal since the inclusion
of Badminton in Olympic Games.
The Indian badminton queen has been challenging the Chinese shuttlers and also has been beating them on different occasions, proving that she has got the skills and confidence to tackle them on any ground.
In the bronze medal match, Saina remained a bit lucky as well as her higher ranked opponent Wang Xin of China got an uncharacteristic injury and had to quit playing.
Saina is quite optimistic for the future of badminton in India as she expects that her achievement in London Olympics will inspire many young shuttlers and they will put in extra effort to become top quality players.
While talking about the badminton future in India, Saina expressed that it will be better. She also said that there are many youngsters who could become top class shuttlers.
She stated, “Badminton will change in India with this. There are a lot of youngsters in the boys’ section as well. I want more girls to come, just like it happens in China and Korea and then India too will be a force to reckon with.”
The spirited Saina, who has been putting in extra effort in her preparation for London Olympics for the last few months, wants to take a few days off from court as she wants to celebrate her achievement.
She further added, “Of course I will give myself a few days off to take in the celebrations. I am a bit disappointed and sad I could not contest for the gold, but ultimately an Olympic medal is a medal and any colour will do.”
Saina has become the first Indian shuttler who has won an Olympic medal and she predicts that it will change the dimensions of badminton the country.
